The forest is an environment in constant flux. Material resources “change hands” when trees draw minerals from the soil, when predators eat their prey, and when bacterial cultures break down decaying matter. A large part of the forest’s interactions is based on balanced relationships between its various species—the forest has its own evolutionary history, which consists of the species’ ongoing adaptation to changes in the environment and to one another. As humans, we have a different relationship with the forest; we are the most invasive species of all, and our interactions with the forest can cause sudden changes.
