“Iron Drop” is a site-specific sculpture created for Deep Forest Art Land. The sculpture is a large 3D rhombus made of four different types of metal: stainless steel, iron, copper, and brass.
“Iron Drop” hangs from a large oak tree on a chain like an oversized drop and, from a distance, resembles a floating prism or a giant cocoon. The interplay between the tree, nature, and the object creates a sense of strangeness—a striking contrast that makes one view the tree, its bark, and the surroundings in a new light. The sculpture thus highlights the grandeur of nature.
The materials the sculpture is made of will change in character and appearance simply because they are out in nature and exposed to wind and weather (especially rain). The iron will rust, the copper will begin to patinate, and the sculpture will become more and more beautiful as it develops a patina. The seasons will also play a major role in the experience of the sculpture “Iron Drop.”
