In this case, the work is the action itself: Julie Bitsch painted hot wax onto a tree in the forest; the solidified shell was cast in bronze—the imprint of the tree on one side, the brushstrokes on the other—but both centered on the “action.” The work also unites a range of concrete physical materials with varying lifespans—wax, wood, stearin, bronze, concrete—with the more abstract and fleeting, yet no less real, phenomena such as time, thought, action, and history.
