Before encountering the brick sculpture, visitors to Skovsnogen have encountered a wide range of other works that have challenged them both sensually and intellectually. Elsewhere, these challenges are often wrapped in humor and romance. With Brinch and Olsson’s brick sculpture, visitors are challenged more directly, and the old craft traditions and the special atmosphere of the spruce forest simultaneously create space for contemplation and reflection. The moment you think about what you hate, you inevitably also think about what you love. With a single visual device, the sculpture lays the foundation for a debate on values and, despite its heavy form, conveys a positive message to the audience.
HATE was built in the summer of 2013 in collaboration with Jacob Olsson.

The Artist

Jes Brinch

Jes Brinch is a Danish installation artist based in Malmö. He is best known for his socially provocative artworks, which, with an aggressive and anti-authoritarian attitude, challenge the boundaries of art and art institutions in general. Two examples are the projects *Burn Out. Brændt børnehave* and *Burn Out. Parking, both from 1994, which Brinch created in collaboration with Henrik Plenge Jakobsen. The two artists received significant media attention when they, respectively, set fire to an installation featuring kindergarten furnishings and exhibited 18 wrecked cars, a camper, and an overturned HT bus at Kongens Nytorv in Copenhagen.
